Galaxy Festival Blog

Galaxy's Dan O'Connell was on site all weekend.  Read his blog here...

Friday

I got down to Global at 9.15pm. The backstage area was relatively calm considering Kanye West was about to go on stage. His changing room was right next to our radio hut. There was a little gap in his window. Every time you peaked through though, all you could see was a giant 7 foot body guard…

First job of the night was speaking to Axwell. He was a bit nervous but excited about playing a festival. Dirty South then crashed the interview as he’d just finished his set. He’d clearly had a few! After we’d finished, Axwell left for his set with Dirty South chasing him across the field. They were like 2 school kids play fighting…very sweet!

Kanye then blasted onto the stage. “Gold Digger” was probably one of the biggest tracks that went off… But I didn’t stay for it all because there was too much going on in the tents. Herve was rockin’ the mini Mixmag arena. Eric Prydz was playing some minimal in his his tent while I was in there. Lots of people were asking if he’s played “Pjanoo” yet. He hadn’t. So I left to see Axwell. It was the first track he was playing as I went in and the tent was bouncing. Brilliant.

Baby D was playing on the Raveology stage which was going off. However she’s now looking a bit older; so probably don’t let her be your fantasy.

I then wandered over to see Tiesto but on the way was distracted by the amount of people flooding the Myspace tent. Turns out Moby had gone on 30 minutes early. On top of that it was Moby Live! It was only meant to be a dj set! V. exciting. So he blasted out the hits for 2 hours playing pretty much everything he’d ever done. We did leave for 5 minutes to see Tiesto at one point. But you couldn’t even get into his tent. 9000 people had got there before we did! If I’m honest I was secretly grateful…it meant I could go and watch Moby till the end of the night. And that was Friday…

Saturday

The sun was beating down when we got back to Global today. There was a sea of Havaianas, Birkenstocks and Bikinis. The BBQs were all well under way.

Sam Sparrow was the first interview of the day. It was on the Myspace bus. This is an old route mater bus that tours the festivals every summer. It is ridiculously hot when 50 people are partying on it! Sam then left for his set which went off over on the main stage. He tried the Robbie Williams microphone spin thing during “Black and Gold”. He dropped it though in front of 25,000 people! Funny.

Robyn was next and she was lovely. She had a really cool pair of Ray Bans on and some weird platforms. (It’s a Swedish thing apparently) She told us she’s gym buddies with Sam Sparrow and likes to work him hard! She then scuttled off to do her set.

Next was the tough bit. Chatting to girls in bikinis in the hot tubs and swimming pool! What a great idea to have a pool. Everybody needed the pool though…it was boiling!

Then I saw Wylie. Weird. He wasn’t on the line-up.  I did some digging and found out he was Mark Ronson’s special guest later. Very cool.

Had some time off so I watched the Red Arrows do their display then chilled out in front of the main stage. It was nice to watch the sun go down while Roisin Murphy was on.

Went over to see Erick Morillo who kicked off his set with that “café del mar” remix and got the tent rockin’!

Back over at the main stage Mark Ronson was about to go on. It was rammed! Mark was in a 1950s Gucci suit that everybody was commenting on. It did look pretty cool but you’d have to be model or musician to wear it. His whole set was fantastic. Wylie and Mark’s band doing “Wearing My Rolex” was unbelievably good. Everybody was dancing and they kept going into “Valerie”.  Mark Ronson then showed off his moon walk which was actually brilliant. They finished with “Stop Me” which was pretty much 50,000 people doing Karaoke! Amazing from start to finish.

Last job of the night was interviewing David Guetta just before he went on. He was very excitable and told me this was part of 30 parties in 30 days. On top of that he’s running his Ibiza parties and putting out a mix compilation! Crazy busy. I caught him going on  and the tent was rammo-in the-main-room! But it was time for me to leave. I was gutted I had to go because it felt like things were just getting started and I had to be somewhere early on Sunday morning. Boo.

An amazing weekend!
